How sustainable is Germany’s bioeconomy – and what opportunities and challenges lie ahead?
A new video illustrates key insights from the 2024 Bioeconomy Monitoring Report and highlights the role of monitoring in assessing sustainability, trends, and trade-offs in the transformation of Germany’s bioeconomy.
The video draws on findings from several interdisciplinary research projects that have contributed to developing approaches and data for monitoring the German bioeconomy. Building on this foundation, the ongoing SYMOBIO 2PLUS project is now preparing the framework for establishing a regular bioeconomy monitoring system in Germany. Coordinated by the Center for Environmental Systems Research (CESR) at the Kassel Institute for Sustainability, University of Kassel, SYMOBIO 2PLUS brings together leading research institutions to develop concrete and practice-oriented proposals for how such a system can be structured and managed. This includes refining indicator sets, advancing analytical methods, and exploring operational options to ensure that bioeconomy monitoring effectively supports evidence-based decision-making and long-term sustainability goals.
